As retirement approaches, there’s some important information you need to know about NZ Super and what you might receive, when you can apply, why you need to apply as soon as possible, and where you can go if you need help.

It can be a complicated process to gather all of the necessary information you need to apply for NZ Super and we recommend that you start this process early, to ensure that you’re well prepared and you can lodge your application as soon as you’re eligible.

Here are some tips and tricks on the who, when, what, why and where you can get answers to the questions you may have, in relation to claiming the NZ Super entitlements.

Who:

Presently you may qualify for NZ Super if you are 65 and over and are an NZ citizen or a permanent resident or residence class visa holder.  For more information in relation to the criteria you need to meet to qualify for this, please visit Work and Income.

You can still be working when you apply for NZ Super, and there are no income or assets tests application to qualify, but it is a good idea to understand the implications on how much you will get for NZ Super, as there are some nuances.

Add to this any money you have accumulated in your KiwiSaver Account – when you retire you can:

  • Withdraw your funds and reduce your debt
  • Retire later and keep contributing to your account
  • Withdraw money from your account in stages and spend the money
  • Leave your money where it is and rely on other investments.

When:

You can apply for NZ Super up to 12 weeks before your 65th birthday (or after if you have already turned 65).

Follow these steps to apply:

  • You need a client number to apply – if you don’t already have a client number, you can apply here
  • Login or register for MyMSD – you will need to do this before you apply
  • Fill in and submit your online application forms for NZ Super
  • Complete any next steps in MyMSD or print any requirements – it will be one or the other but not both.

Where:

If you need help, there are many sources available to you.  Some of these are below:

The internet is also full or tips, tools and reference material that you can read and explore – just remember to only rely on information that is from reputable providers.

What retirement looks like for you will likely be different to the next person, so it’s important to plan ahead. If you’re nearing the NZ Super age, remember to apply for any entitlements sooner rather than later, but you may need to be patient, as Centrelink processes your claim. You’ll need to gather all of your evidence around your assets and income, and the more prepared you are, the easier the process is likely to be.
